From kitchen table to foyerSourced
A kitchen-table investigation became a mathematics association’s floor
Inspired by a magazine column, American amateur Marjorie Rice investigated pentagons that could tile a plane. She drew diagrams at her kitchen table and sent discoveries in her own notation for expert examination. In 1999, one of her patterns became the basis for the foyer floor at the Mathematical Association of America’s headquarters.
An arrangement on paper became a place to walk.
