The lawyers landed in jailSourced
Opposing lawyers fought in court during the Anti-Rent trials
New York’s Anti-Rent War of 1839–1845 involved tenants resisting the collection of rents. At a leaders’ retrial in 1845, defence lawyer Ambrose Jordan and prosecutor John Van Buren began a fistfight in court. The judge sentenced both to 24 hours of solitary confinement in the county jail.
Those conducting the case received a sentence of their own.
