From books to a canoeSourced
A family carer became a collector of fish
Mary Kingsley cared for her family and read books in her father’s library. After her parents died, she travelled to West Africa in 1893. In 1895 she explored Gabon’s Ogooué River by canoe and collected fish specimens. Some fish associated with her collecting were named after her.
A world explored through books became a world explored from a canoe.
