The apparent petals belong to a predator
The orchid mantis has white or pink coloration and flattened, petal-like limbs. Its resemblance to flowers can attract pollinating insects as prey. Research has found greater attraction than to real flowers under the conditions studied. The flower-like appearance serves an aggressive mimic.
The insect approaching a flower may instead approach a hunter.
