Sixteen trees become shrine pillars

At Nagano’s Suwa Grand Shrine, the Onbashira Festival brings sixteen selected trees down from the mountains and erects them at the corners of its four shrines. Replacement takes place every six years, traditionally counted as seven.

Replacing pillars becomes a large communal undertaking.
