The chair cloth’s name remembers a grooming fashion
An antimacassar is a small cloth protecting a chair or sofa’s fabric. Its name recalls Macassar hair oil and washable covers used to keep that oil from soiling furniture. An item that looks decorative also carried a practical response to a grooming fashion.
The chair needed its own protection from the styled hair.
