Following other ants can turn into an endless circle
Some army ants separated from their main foraging group lose the pheromone trail and begin following one another in a rotating circle. This phenomenon is called an ant mill. The ants may continue until they die from exhaustion.
Following the ant ahead does not always lead somewhere new.
