A place to sit and talkSourced
The telephone table acquired its own chair
A gossip bench combines a chair with a small side table for a telephone. Some included storage for a directory. When the phone was a nonportable household object, its fixed position encouraged a piece of furniture that supplied a seat beside it.
The device created a place in the home for the conversation.
