History in an observing logSourced
A city fire interrupted the stars
The 1827 fire in Turku, Finland, interrupted astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander’s work at the hilltop observatory. The building survived, and observations resumed on September 9. It also temporarily housed university administration and meetings displaced by the fire.
A place for watching the sky took on urgent work on the ground.
