Rowing to a governor’s inauguration

On January 10, 1862, Leland Stanford travelled by rowboat to his inauguration building in Sacramento. Severe flooding had submerged streets. California’s capital was then temporarily moved to San Francisco.

The boat was a way to reach a land-based ceremony through a flooded city.
