A theme meant to wake the parentsSourced
SpongeBob's creators wanted a theme loud enough to annoy sleeping parents.
The SpongeBob SquarePants theme adapts an old sea-shanty melody. Creative director Derek Drymon later recalled the idea: on a Saturday morning, a pirate would shout from the TV while children watched and parents tried to sleep nearby.
Its exuberant opening was no accident.
