From a leg brace to three Olympic golds

Childhood polio weakened Wilma Rudolph’s left leg. After treatment, she learned to walk without a brace by about twelve. In Rome in 1960, she won Olympic gold in the 100 metres, 200 metres and sprint relay.

Walking independently came before running for medals.
