A throne from discarded materials
James Hampton worked as a janitor while building a religious assemblage in a rented Washington garage. Over 14 years from 1950, he used old furniture, foil, jars and mirror fragments. The completed work contained 180 objects with a throne at its centre.
Discarded materials became the parts of one person’s sustained project.
