Rejected by the race, she crossed the Channel
A Channel swimming competition rejected Florence Chadwick in 1950 because she was not well known. She organised her own attempts and crossed from France that August. In 1951 she completed the reverse crossing, becoming the first woman to swim it in both directions.
A rejected entry did not close the sea.
